Asgard

Located in Central Square, this eaterie's unfortunate name prompts chuckles and quips from the most stone-faced of diners. If you can laugh off the name, the menu and ambiance are accessible, including a standard Brunch on Saturday and Sunday until three. BA says the Asgard has good enough grub, so bring on the ass jokes, and enjoy the atmosphere that evokes Medieval torture chamber cum country club den.

B-Side

Are you hip enough to throw back sidecars while listening to a Morrisey album in it's whining entirety? Pushed aside in Kendall Square, the B-side offers late night eats at fair prices and a large drink list for the beverage challenged. So bring your 'I'm so cool" attitude' to this diner-esque late-night spot. Aging hipsters in Cambridge? Who'da thunk it?

Cantab

A Central square landmark for god knows what reason. This place is dirty, and it doesn't win our vote as best dive bar. We don't like the fat smelly guy checking ids. There is nothing charming about that unless you like smelly fat guys. We'll be at the Cambridgeport on (Mass Ave as well), for $2.00 beers when we're slumming it. At least they have pool, darts, and a fat guy who doesn't smell working the door.

Cuchi Cuchi

Ok, the name sounds like something you do to your significant other when you're trying to get your groove on. Never mind that. A solid Tapas menu and some creative cocktail mixing make for a memorable evening out--if the servers are with it that night. Steer clear of paying the nine dollars they charge for a tanqueray and tonic though. Stick to their signature cocktails you can't find anywhere else, like the "Between the Sheets." You get the picture. If you're really trying to woo your date, take them to the trustworthy, tried and true, Dali. Same owners, different tapas, better service. See our upcoming review.

Daedalus

This restaurant/bar on Mount Auburn St. in Harvard Square has fantastic food at extremely fair prices. It's a good first-date spot too, complete with fresh roses on the tables, dim lighting, and oh, forget about the date…the food is where it's at! Check out the Rissotto of the day, the Daily Catch or the Lamb Stew. After ten-thirty the place gets rocking upstairs with Harvard students sucking back Mojitos, and Euro-lounge music, so stay for a drink, and oh, that's right you're on a date, so keep your eyes off the Harvard dance squad. Joyce would approve.

Enormous Room

Comfy couches and chairs, and a not really that enormous room make this nightspot a good place to grab a drink and chill out. The djs make you want to shake what your mother gave you, but there's no dancing here, just wall-flowers trying to be seen and not much more. This place is better for groups to hang out, or a date spot, but initiating conversation with people lamped out in sunken chairs with their shoes off is a tad trying. Stay for a drink and some Middle Eastern appetizers and then scram before you fall asleep. We should mention that there is no sign for the Enormous room, just an elephant above the entrance next to Central Kitchen on Mass Ave in Central Square.

The Field

This is a gritty Irish pub that jams in twenty to thirty somethings Thursdays through Saturdays. We like the loud music, the cheap drinks and the pool table. This is a great local's place to frequent, so grab a pint of Guinness, a pool stick, and just play the field...

Grendel's Den

This legendary Harvard Square hangout boasts inexpensive eats, beers, cocktails and pitchers of Sangria. The atmosphere is casual, and so is the service. You only have to bring a few bucks to have a few drinks, and take in the energetic vibe of this subterranean eatery. It's a good place to meet with friends for appetizers or entrees before your big night out. Fare ranges from nachos to pasta, to the ever popular cheese fondue. Oh, and they have a charming faux fireplace...who can lose?
